WvDoraGst1: Anyone having problems justifying type?
JeanAM: hi everyone, how are things going?
WvjoeGst2: hi jean, sorry I wasnt here last week it takes a bit of time for me to get into the habit of comming here every week
WvmeganGst7 entered the room.
WVMarioGst5: Things are going well for me
JeanAM: no problem,
WvDoraGst1: Hi Jean. I'm having prob justifying text. It's grayed out.
JeanAM: if you don't justify it is it not greyed out?
WvthunGst8 entered the room.
WvjoeGst2: thanks, also the videos arnt working on my computer, it says that its the server, is someting wrong with it or is it my computer? I could go to the collage and do my work there if the server works allright on those computers.
WvDoraGst1: The box to click on to justify is not active (greyed out). But the first three boxes on the left of the paragraph palate DO work - they are active.
JeanAM: try a different browser - or have you? which browser are you using?
WvjoeGst2: i use firefox
MaryKayP: I had 2 issues this week. The first one was on the clone source. In the book Deek was able to clone the eye and it appeared to be drawn the opposite way, but when I did it it was a exact clone. The second issue I had was while removing a scratch from bluebeard the select patch tool, magic wand, them moving the area to a non damaged area. When I moved it to a non damaged area the new area was grayed out and not very usable
JeanAM: strange - i have been told that sometimes during evening hours the videos can be hard to access - have you tried different times of the day?
JeanAM: regardingthe justified text - are you using a text box?
WvVasanGst3: I had problem viewing the videos--they wouldn't load up--this afternoon but are working fine now.
WvDoraGst1: no text box.. not sure what that is in Photoshop. I've used them in Quark. I'm just doing text using the text tool, and I can center it, or make it flush right or left, but not justify.
JeanAM: ok - well that's good to know - the videos are housed on the west valley server - and usually work - but if there is too much traffic that might pose a problem - i will check with the IT people... in the meantime you could try the college if that isn't too much of an inconvenience.
WvDoraGst1: Re: text - not a big deal. I just discovered the issue tonight. I'll research it on the Adobe forum. :-)
JeanAM: to justify you need to take the text tool - click and draw a box, then inout the text and try justifing it should work better
WvjoeGst2: Thanks, I'll try again the videos again after this meeting.
JeanAM: ok - keep me posted please :-)
JeanAM: deke sometimes skips steps - so just try and follow and if you can't duplicate 100% don't worry - as you get more experience you will probably be able to solve the missing steps.. sorry - but it's hard to troubleshoot his videos...
WvDoraGst1: Jean - It worked!! The text box works!
JeanAM: yes indeedy!!!
WvDoraGst1: Never knew about the text box ... all these years... :-)
JeanAM: justifying is a bit of a pai - you need to adjust the horizontal spacing and every font works differently - so it takes some tweeky and can try people's patience - but the end result can be beautiful :)
WvDoraGst1: Normally I stay away from justifying and just do ragged right or centered....
JeanAM: yes but now you can justify too!!!!
WvDoraGst1: Hee-hee - that's why I'm taking your course!
JeanAM: so how's the workload for the class? is it manageable?
WvDoraGst1: Workload feels a little better -- but I feel I need to learn some design skills.
MaryKayP: not sure if you saw my issue with photoshp a while up
WvjoeGst2: one more thing, its about my colloge, you said I should redo it since it isnt randy rhoads isnt that historical of a person, but I looked at past sudents work and saw one on bob marly. So if I stay with the topic of randy whould I get an F? If so I'll my colloge on H Tubman instead to make sure I get the A.
WvjohnGst4: I'm struggling a little with the workload, but that might just be me
WvVasanGst3: Reg. workload, I'll say that when I take the advanced class, it won't be the condensed session. :)
JeanAM: i replied regarding the deke videos, was that it?
MaryKayP: no it wasnt the video, it was actaully working with photoshop
JeanAM: i said you need to place him in a historical context, and the requirements of class assignments change, so you best pay attention to what the class asks for this class not an older one...
MaryKayP: hang on i have to retype it i cant copy paste
JeanAM: sorry missed it can you ask again...
JeanAM: there is no guarantee of an A are you a high school student by chance??? :-)
WvjoeGst2: ok, yes I'm 11th grade.
JeanAM: well this college - don't try my patience with predicting your grade :-)
JeanAM: sorry mary kay i looked back and still didn't see your question....
WvDoraGst1: MaryKay question was something about cloning an eye.. :-)
MaryKayP: In the book deke was able to clone bluebeards eye and it looked like he cloned it so it was actaully his left, when i cloned it it was an exact clone. did i miss a step to make it go the opposite way
JeanAM: yes in reference to deke videos she was following...
MaryKayP: i didnt see that deke video, its from the book
WVMarioGst5: I thought that feat was pretty impressive
JeanAM: he probbaly flipped it - may be cloned it on a seperate layer, and then you have flexibility with ediitng it before merging it with the main image...perhaps?
JeanAM: ok sorry the deke book
WVMarioGst5: he used the clone source palette
WvjoeGst2: sorry about that, its my first summer college class so I get nervous.
MaryKayP: i got it to clone but it cloned a right but it didnt invert like i thought it would
WvthunGst8: did you reverse the width to -100?
WVMarioGst5: gotta check the setting in the palette. I think it was -100% on the X axis
JeanAM: joe - it's great to have high school students in the class - there are a few of you - and you all are doingreally nice work :-)
WvDoraGst1: Joe, all I can say is I wish Photoshop existed when I was in 11th grade!! I would've been immediately addicted!
JeanAM: yescheck the palette that will probably be where the missing step is...
WvjoeGst2: thanks guys.
WvrajasGst9 entered the room.
MaryKayP: and when I used the healing patch tool, them moved the area to a non-damaged area the "new" patched area was washed out, almost like it was beached
JeanAM: i've gotten stickier on keeping the mid-term more historically oriented - cause it makes for more interesting collages, and hisotry is instructive to many things in current day...
WVMarioGst5: Same thing happened to mine
WvDoraGst1: Yeah, we keep repeating history.. when will we humans ever learn? :-)
JeanAM: perhaps the settings were reduced that made it almost completely washed out?
WvmeganGst7 left the room (signoff)
WVMarioGst5: I think my brush size was too small and the tear was causing it to be more white
JeanAM: ah - that is very observant mario :-)
WvjohnGst4 left the room (signoff)
WVMarioGst5: thanks
WvjohnGst7 entered the room.
JeanAM: before i forget - i will send out an all class email - but i am away next monday and so have not scheduled chat for june 30
WvthunGst8 left the room (signoff)
WvDoraGst1: Jean, I just want to say thanks for answering my justification question... I may be justifiying something on my mid-term.
JeanAM: no problem, glad i could help :-)
WvDoraGst1 -)
WvDoraGst1: My smiley lost its eyes... :-)
JeanAM: i got it regardless!!!
WvVasanGst3: probably you were justifying your smiley? :)
JeanAM: lol
WvDoraGst1: so some people put noses in their smilys and some don't... my son says no noses!
JeanAM: joe what high school do oyu go to?
JeanAM: are there any teachers here this evening?
WvjoeGst2: I'm homeschooled.
WvDoraGst1: cool!
WvrajasGst9: hi Jean does the collage need to be a certain size?
JeanAM: so are oyu taking otehr classes in the summer or is this it?
JeanAM: work around 8x10 vertical or horizontal or thereabouts
JeanAM: so joe - how did you hear about the photoshop class?
WvVasanGst3: 8x10 @ 72 dpi?
WvjoeGst2: I might take another class after I finish this one, I just want to make sure I dont have too much homework over the summer.
WvjoeGst2: i heard of it from that one paper my mom got.
JeanAM: 72 is fine to send to me but if oyu work at 90+ then you can print out a nice image. 72 will be blurry printed
WvVasanGst3: Got it. Thanks.
JeanAM: yes - too much homework over the summer should be avoided i would say :-)
WVMarioGst5 left the room (signoff)
JeanAM: regardingthe collage size and dpi...
JeanAM: if you are using only web graphics then you will probably be forced to work at 72dpi...
MaryKayP: ok im off, talk to ya'll later
MaryKayP left the room (signoff)
WvVasanGst3: but for posters. can't we upscale like in Deke's video?
WvrajasGst9: ok , so do all the pictures also need to be over 90 dpi so all looks good
JeanAM: if you scan graphics you should always scan at a higher resolution say 300 - and then can reduce the dpi in the image menu under image size...depending on what dpi the other graphics you are using are
JeanAM: 72 is the absolutely lowest dpi
JeanAM: and is most suitbale for web graphics
WvDoraGst1: Jean, I'd send you 300 if you let me! But that would take up a lot of space on your computer...
JeanAM: if you want to ever print out your work then you need to work higher - 90 mightwork but 150 guarantees a nice print
WvrajasGst9: Okay,
JeanAM: no you can work at 300 and then reduce to 72 - and have much better quality then just working in 72
JeanAM: does that make sense?
WvDoraGst1: Yep. I was just kidding about sending you 300 dpi. :-)
WvVasanGst3: yes, it does.
JeanAM: when you takea picture with your digital camera or scan always usea higher dpi setting than 72
JeanAM: yes 300 dpi graphics can be large files but higher res is bliss :-)
WvDoraGst1: Soooooo pretty on the screen....
JeanAM: and on paper too :-)
WvDoraGst1: Guess I need a printer that can print on larger paper.. or send it out...
JeanAM: also you can experiment with dpi and printing - sometimes the printer will be afactor as well
WvjoeGst2: whens the next meeting? I might be on vacation two weeks from now so I have to make sure when it is.
JeanAM: i haven't scheduled chat but my guess is we will skip next week and have our last chat on july 6
JeanAM: but i will notify you al by email about the july 6 chat
WvjoeGst2: okay thanks, I got to go see you all next week.
WvjoeGst2 left the room (signoff)
JeanAM: ok joe take care - so any other burning issues
WvDoraGst1: No issues -- just LOVE this course!
JeanAM: oh that's nice to hear - am glad it'sworking out - in an in person class i can usually gage the class but online sometimes it's harder :-)
JeanAM: but you all are doing such a good job - really good learners :-)
WvDoraGst1: This is my first online class and it's great. I'm signed up for the fall advanced class, too.
WvrajasGst9: yes i am liking it too, did not know how the online wud work fro me
JeanAM: i took an online class over 10 years ago and it was yawn, yawn so dreary, it's nice we have software to make videos and the textbooks are so much better than they were 10-15 years ago
WvDoraGst1: Good to hear.. now I don't feel so bad that I'm taking a Photoshop class -finally - after all these years. The software has more fun things now, too!
WvVasanGst3: online classes are getting good but from my experience...they are not substitute for regular in-class classes.
WvDoraGst1: Hi Vasa, for me it depends on the subject. I'm so glad there are now online classes that are completely online - it seems like whenever I had a class or a text, one of my kids would get sick and I'd have to miss it..
JeanAM: yes, but our online enrollment has steadily grown while our evening in person class enrollment has steadily dropped - so it seems they are more convenient for working folks...
WvDoraGst1: Yeah, and us moms.. :-)
JeanAM: yes and oyu moms :-)
WvVasanGst3: I'm in total agreement with you on convenience!
JeanAM: there is an article about moms in our program on the dmis website - you should take a look...just a sec i'll try and find the url
WvrajasGst9: yes videos really help ,and i like working at my pace...or I am worried about catching up with the claasroom
JeanAM: http://www.digital-media.westvalley.edu/dmisparents.pdf - there isa link to it on the homepage of digital media
WvDoraGst1: Yes, I really enjoy the videos. And there is so much out there now.. on YouTube and other sites. But having a class and a schedule is mandatory for me or it won't happen!
WvDoraGst1: Thanks Jean - I'll take a look at it!
JeanAM: yes a schedule with deadlines helps a great deal!!
WvVasanGst3: for me...structure of the class is very helpful in learning.
WvDoraGst1: I told a friend months ago that I needed an accountability partner. I have a bunch of Photoshop CS2 videos that I got on sale and never opened. Duh!
JeanAM: such is life - i have stacks of books that i have yet to read but intend to :-)
WvDoraGst1: Don't get me started on books.... I love books! Well, need to get back to family life now.. enjoyed the Chat. :-)
JeanAM: well kids i have to go feed my cat before she starts chewing my arm
JeanAM: so happy photoshopping and will be in touch via email...
WvVasanGst3: Thanks, Jean.
WvDoraGst1: Eeeewie! Goodnight!
WvVasanGst3: See you all in the next chat session...whenever that is.
WvrajasGst9: Thanks alll bye
WvjohnGst7: bye jean
WvDoraGst1 left the room (signoff)
JeanAM: good night all
