WvmeganGst3: Hi everybody!
MarykGst10: hi
WvshawnGst11 entered the room.
WvDoraGst5: Hi Megan! How did you like masking?
WvmeganGst3: I loved it! Still tweaking my homework. How about you?
WvMarioGst9 entered the room.
WvDoraGst5: I had some problems, but I made it work!
WvMarioGst9: Do we get extra points because we are here and the instructor is not
WvmeganGst3: I always think of Tim Gunn on Project Runway -- "make it work"! :)
WvDoraGst5: Mario - I'll give you extra points.
MarykGst10: if shes not here who would we get the points from, ill give you a photoshopped gold star
WvDoraGst5: Oh yeah, Project Runway!
OlgaGst8 entered the room.
WvMarioGst9: I'll take anything I can get!
MarykGst10 left the room (signoff)
WvmeganGst3: lol Mario
WvDoraGst5: I think I read somewhere that if Jean isn't here that we should chat anyway.
WvjohnGst6 entered the room.
WvDoraGst5: Has anyone started gathering material for the midterm?
WvMarioGst9: Not yet. Still working on my mask
WvmeganGst3: Good question. Nope. Haven't thought about the mid-term yet.
WvshawnGst11 left the room (signoff)
OlgaGst8: What do you guys think about the workload? I am super busy spending days on reading, watching videos, and doing the project...is it just me?
WvMarioGst9: A lot of work
WvshawnGst10 entered the room.
WvDoraGst5: How's your mask going, Mario?
MaryKayP entered the room.
WvmeganGst3: No Olga -- not just you. I'm very surprised by how much time I'm spending doing the assignments.
WvDoraGst5: Olga, yes it's a TON of work! Thank goodness I love it, though.
MaryKayP: I know, it is a lot of work
WvjohnGst6: I thought I was just slow. good to hear others are spending a lot of time too.
MaryKayP: i was going to take another class but i dropped it once i started doing this
WvDoraGst5: I did the wrong thing for hours the other day, and had to start all over!
MaryKayP: on no!
WvmeganGst3: In fact, I'm worried I'm not going to finish by midnight tonight to turn in and have it considered "on time".
WvMarioGst9 left the room (signoff)
OlgaGst8: I tried several different images before completing a good mask...try to find an object with somewhat uniform background
WvMarioGst9 entered the room.
WvDoraGst5: It's okay - it is really gonna stick in my head after all that work.
MaryKayP: its hard finding objects to work with, im not sure what takes more time. Finding them or fixing them
WvDoraGst5: Megan, maybe you could send in what you have so far. Jean mentioned not to panic about the masking.
WvMarioGst9: The mask is taking forever!
WvjohnGst6: FYI A nice free stock photo site I found.... www.everystockphoto.com
MaryKayP: sweet thanks
WvDoraGst5: I tried to do the screen blend mode to duplicate the mask and lighten my artifacts, but no luck!
WvDoraGst5: Thanks John!
WvshawnGst10: where's our instructor
MaryKayP left the room (signoff)
WvmeganGst3: Great resource, John!
WvDoraGst5: I think Jean will read this later. :-)
WvjohnGst6: What did you guys talk about last week? I missed the chat
WvMarioGst9: No real theme to the chats
WvmeganGst3: Thanks, Dora for the offer. I'm almost done. Just not sure how much more time I'm going to have tonight. :)
WvDoraGst5: Megan, sounds like you're a perfectionist, like me.
OlgaGst8: Has anyone created a blog? I know it's not a requirement, but how much time would it take to set one up?
WvmeganGst3: Last week's chat was interesting. Not much said. Lots of poo pooers about this format -- they wanted a message board type system where we could post questions.
WvMarioGst9: I haven't done one yet but I might in the short future
WvshawnGst10: was jean late last time?
OlgaGst8: No
WvDoraGst5: Olga, we talked about using blogspot last week.. easy to set up - but I haven't done mine yet.
WvMarioGst9: oh yeah, tons of people loving the flickr
WvvasanGst7: if anyone wants transcript of last week's chat session, send me flickr mail. http://www.flickr.com/photos/nfarmer
WvmeganGst3: Olga -- the blog is easy. Use blogger.com and it is pretty self-explanatory.
OlgaGst8: Thanks!
WvDoraGst5: blogger and blogspot are the same, I believe.
WvjohnGst6: I set up a blog a few years ago on blogspot.com. it was pretty easy. I'll be adding my homework from this class on it soon
WvmeganGst3: Yeah. Both blogger and blogspot are the same -- both owned by Google.
WvDoraGst5: Have you added anything to your blog since last week Megan? I didn't check.
JeanAM entered the room.
WvDoraGst5: Hi Jean!
MaryKayP entered the room.
MaryKayP left the room (signoff)
WvmeganGst3: Yeah. I started with HW 4 part 3 but then the phone rang. Haven't loaded the rest. luv4photoshop.blogspot.com
WvmeganGst3: Hi Jean.
JeanAM: Hey there! sorry am late. How are things going? I hope you are having a good chat without me :-)
WvDoraGst5: Yes, but we missed you.
WvMarioGst9: we were just complaining a little
WvMarioGst9: no biggie
OlgaGst8: just keeping very busy :-)
JeanAM: I've graded all the duotones that were submitted and you guys did a really nice job on that assignment!!!
JeanAM: what are you complaining about?
WvDoraGst5: Thanks! It was fun.. long, but fun. Keeping me out of trouble!
OlgaGst8: workload
WvvasanGst7: complaining about how time-consuming making a mask from scratch is. :)
WvmeganGst3: The duotones were fun! :)
WvshawnGst10: i agree! it was really cool!
WvDoraGst5: The fall course will seem like a breeze..
WvMarioGst9: Not really complaining just venting a little
JeanAM: The big learning curve happens in thefirst half of the class I think, so getting over the mid-term will be good!!
WvDoraGst5: Did anyone try the quick mask?
WvshawnGst10: is everyone here relatively new to photoshop?
JeanAM: ok - so what are you venting about - you don't have to tell me :-) I just want to know if i can help in any way ...
OlgaGst8: I did, it was easier than from scratch, but it depends on the image
WvrajasGst13 entered the room.
WvMarioGst9: venting about how time consuming some of the work is. Namely the mask assignment
WvDoraGst5: I'm new to masks, curves, levels.. quick selection tool.. but not new to Photoshop.
WvshawnGst10: well thats good (:
JeanAM: don't get too hung up o nthe first mask tutorial in the text - it ismeant to demonstrate one technique with a particular type of image...
WvjohnGst6: I'm new to photoshop the correct way!
WvMarioGst9: I'm new to all the color stuff in Photoshop so big learning curve there for me
OlgaGst8: Me too!
JeanAM: but it is an eye opener at this stage - and this is what's important :-)
WvmeganGst3: Yeah...the venting was about how much time it takes to watch videos, do tutorials, reading, assignments, etc.
WvDoraGst5: I'm still hitting myself in the head for missing OPACITY all these years!!
WvshawnGst10: haha
WvDoraGst5: I LOVE opacity!
WvshawnGst10: me too!
JeanAM: oh the price of learning :-) well vent away i do the same with my studies too (lol)
WvmeganGst3: Dora, you're funny.
WvmeganGst3 smiles
MaryKayP entered the room.
OlgaGst8: Jean, I love the class, and the assignments are fun, the only complaint I have is the lack of time since it's a summer class, I wish I could spend more time on each project
JeanAM: when i discovered the layer effects - i was mezmorized for photoshop for days
WvrajasGst13: jean: how much time shd one be allocating to yr homework and lessons per day?
WvDoraGst5: It's addicting. :-)
MaryKayP: the curves has me facinated and frustrated at the same time
JeanAM: yes -the summer class is a bit packed in - but remember you can always revisit the website and as i update it (Little by little) every semester you can make use of it in thefuture
WvshawnGst10: were we supposed to create a blog for our work?
WvvasanGst7: Watching Deke's video (selecting the cow out) was like watching a magic show!
DonnaA entered the room.
WvmeganGst3: I have a question unrelated to our assignments. I copied a line art image from the internet (an outline of the state of California) and I want the black outline to be thicker. Is there anyway to do that other than by hand with the brush or pencil tool?
JeanAM: the blog is optional but am thrilled many students are already posting their work on them - y'all are such keeners :-)
WvDoraGst5: Megan, select the black and.. scale it? Just guessing.
WvDoraGst5: Could be messy that way.
WvjohnGst6: Jean, is there a list of current blogs? I will be adding mine soon, but I'd like to check out what other people are doing
WvshawnGst10: Megan, you could select the black and then apply a stroke to it.
WvshawnGst10: you can choose the thickness of the line that way
JeanAM: you might beable to select the line and then under the select menu>modify>expand work with making it thicker, but tracing it with the pen tool might be the best option, need to see which would sork best
WvmeganGst3: OOOH. Shawn, that's an idea I hadn't tried.
WvmeganGst3: Thanks.
MaryKayP left the room (signoff)
JeanAM: the list of blogs is on the gallery page that features student's work
WvshawnGst10: haha, I dont know why tapped in did it, but its acutally Shawna. it cut off the "a"
DonnaA: Hi Jean, Sometimes I get the message "No Image Selected" while I just open I Image?
WvmeganGst3: Thanks, Jean. That's what I was thinking but I didn't know how to do it...I knew there was an expand command.
MaryKayP entered the room.
WvDoraGst5: Thanks for letting us know, Shawna!
JeanAM: dos the image actually open?
MaryKayP: sorry, i keep getting kicked out every 5 mins or so
DonnaA: Yes
WvshawnGst10: your welcome (:
OlgaGst8: maybe you need to select the background layer?
JeanAM: so it is an error message that doesn't interfere with you doing the opening operation?
MaryKayP: if someone wouldnt mind emailing me the chat session later, so i can see if i missed anything. my email is ***********@gmail.com
DonnaA: No just Collor corecting or cropping will not be posible
WvvasanGst7: MaryKay, I just emailed the transcript to you.
JeanAM: oh, yes as was previously said make sure you have the right layer selected...
WvDoraGst5: DonnaA, is it a jpg? Can you save it as a psd and then try?
WvamyGst14 entered the room.
MaryKayP: thanks
WvmeganGst3: I've made many horrific errors by not having the right layer selected... lol
JeanAM: sorry marykay i camelate so good someone who has been here forthe entire chat sent it to you
MaryKayP left the room (signoff)
WvamyGst14: n e 1 having as much trouble w/ masks as i am
JeanAM: she's gone ----
WvMarioGst9: I am
DonnaA: OK I will try it again, the other question I have is, if I have 2 Images I want to merge, hot do I get them in the same size?
OlgaGst8: I did, but I found a different image that worked better
WvamyGst14: n e thoughts, suggestions?
WvMarioGst9: I just switched the photo I am using for the Mask for the 4th time
WvvasanGst7: No, I think my trouble with masks is the worst. :)
WvshawnGst10: Donna, you can use free transform
WvDoraGst5: My masks are only half-friendly.
WvMarioGst9: better to use an image with a solid background color
MaryKayP entered the room.
JeanAM: don't worry to much about the mask trouble - it's meant as a primer - and as we cover more mask techniques you will have a good undestanding of them
WvMarioGst9: or one that does not include any colors that are in the item you want to extract
WvamyGst14: does having a black and white image make "masking" more difficult?
OlgaGst8: Select image with contrasting objects (i.e. light background + dark object)
JeanAM: yes- you see if anything learni
Sorry, I didn't realize that I didn't copy the whole session. If you have the rest of it, please send it my way.
